Old Time Radio Shows - 20 CASSETTES - 30 hours Publisher, Radio Spirits (October 1998) Twenty cassettes, thirty hours, sixty classic radio episodes from the CBS Radio Network. You will enjoy the humor, suspense, mystery and excitement of radio from the 30's, 40's and 50's. In 1928, cigar executive William S. Paley purchased the United Independent Broadcasters, a struggling network of 16 radio stations. By the end of the year, his fledgling network, renamed the Columbia Broadcasting System, had grown to 47 affiliates. Despite the Great Depression, Bill Paley's CBS earned more that $1.6 million in 1932 and established itself as the only serious competition for RCA's mammoth NBC Red and Blue networks. To compete against NBC's high-priced comedy stars, CBS groomed new talent including Bing Crosby, Kate Smith and later Frank Sinatra. By 1935, Paley's Columbia network boasted more affiliate stations than the Red or Blue network. CBS presented high-quality series like the Lux Radio Theatre, and offered innovative dramatic programs directed by Irving Reis, Norman Corwin, William N. Robson and Orson Welles as unsponsored "sustainers" against NBC comedies like The Chase and Sanborn Hour and The Jack Benny Program. CBS dominated network news during the Second World War with commentators H. V. Kaltenborn and Boake Carter and correspondents Edward R. Murrow and Eric Sevareid. By the end of the 1940s, Paley had lured Jack Benny and Amos 'n' Andy to his CBS airwaves, and Arthur Godfrey was becoming the most popular on-air personality in broadcasting history.
