Theodore Bikel has the authentic sound of the characters of the story, so one forgives him the sometimes wooden narrative parts. John Rubinstein is excellent, beyond criticism. I grew up among Yiddish speakers but how a young man can get that long-ago accent so perfectly is beyond me! Alas, it's also beyond Julie Harris. Apparently no one taught her the pronunciation for the few foreign words in her part. (She pronounces the name Piniele as pin-ee-EL-uh when it really is PIN-yel-uh.) But even worse is that she can't read. Ahead. But two out of three ain't bad and her part is small so all together it's an almost great rendering of an important book. |
