APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH
The poet T.S. Eliot wrote, “April is the cruelest month.” Since 1996 the Academy of American Poets has strived to change that. National Poetry Month (NPM) was first established by the Academy as a month-long celebration of poetry. According to the Academy, it is a world-wide celebration that has increased awareness of our poetic heritage and culture. It has also established poetry as an accessible medium and promoted poetry books and magazines.
Today government agencies, officials, poets, art organizations and retailers all help to celebrate this special event by holding poetry-related events and pushing poetry, in all forms, to the forefront of their organization.
April was chosen as NPM because it is during the school year. February is Black History Month, March is Women’s History Month, so April was it! Though the aforementioned Eliot quote should be reason enough. National Poetry Month aims to highlight the legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets. It also serves to introduce more Americans to the pleasures of poetry reading and to make poetry a more important part of school curriculum.
The Academy provides ideas for a lot of activities, such as reading poetry out loud and listening to poetry being read. So why not take the time to browse our poetry selections on audio to join in the celebration.
