A Novel by the Winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Literature

“A brilliant novel." --New York Times

"One of the best writers now at work." --Newsweek

"In a vigilant style, which has been deservedly admired, he transforms rage into precision and allows events to speak with their own inherent irony." --Swedish Academy, announcing the 2001 Nobel Prize

In this incandescent novel, V. S. Naipaul takes us deeply into the life of one man, an Indian who, uprooted by the bloody tides of Third World history, has come to live in an isolated town at the bend of a great river in a newly independent African nation. Naipaul gives us the most convincing and disturbing vision yet of what happens in a place caught between the dangerously alluring modern world and its own tenacious past and traditions.

About the Author: V. S. Naipaul was born in Trinidad in 1932. He went to England on a scholarship in 1950. After four years at Oxford he began to write and since then has followed no other profession. He is the author of more than twenty books of fiction and nonfiction and the recipient of numerous honors, including the Nobel Prize in 2001, the Booker Prize in 1971, and a knighthood for services to literature in 1990. He lives in Wiltshire, England.

About the Performer: Earphones Awards recipient Simon Vance was born in England and worked for the BBC for ten years as a radio news announcer and also worked as a narrator for the Royal National Institute for the Blind in London. In addition to narrating for Blackstone Audiobooks, he involves himself in numerous stage-acting projects in the United States and Europe.
