In the perilous years before the Civil War, the fates of two people---Cain, a scarred but proud man haunted by the terrible ability to track people who don't want to be found, and Rosetta, a runaway slave fueled by the passion and determination only a mother can feel---will intertwine in an unforgettable journey of hardship and redemption that will change them forever.

Cain is a scarred but proud man haunted by a terrible skill---the ability to track people who don't want to be found.

Rosetta is a runaway slave fueled by the passion and determination only a mother can feel. And she will risk everything for the promise of freedom.

In the perilous years before the Civil War, their fates will intertwine in an unforgettable journey---one of hardship and redemption that will take them from Virginia to Boston and back---an odyssey that will change them forever.

Michael C. White has written beautiful novels before, including the acclaimed A Dream of Wolves, yet none has prepared us for the sheer scope and drama of this new tale---a dazzling tapestry of imagination and character, atmosphere, and emotion. Poignant and utterly compelling, it is a story to be savored and remembered.

About the Author: A New York Times Notable author, Michael White has written four novels, A Brother’s Blood, The Blind Side of the Heart, A Dream of Wolves, and The Garden of Martyrs, as well as a collection of short stories, Marked Men. He teaches fiction writing and literature courses at Fairfield University and is on the faculty of Stonecoast, the University of Southern Maine’s low-residency MFA program. He lives in Connecticut.

About the Performer: William Dufris began his audio career doing radio plays, audiobooks, film/animation dubbing, and language tapes in London, where he resided for thirteen years. While there, he had the honor of sharing the microphone in a number of BBC Radio plays with Kathleen Turner, Sharon Gless, Stockard Channing, and Helena Bonham-Carter. These experiences led him to cofound two audio production companies: The Story Circle Ltd. and Mind's Eye Productions. He has also acted on stage and television in the United States, the UK, and Germany. William is the original voice of Bob (and Farmer Pickles/Mr. Beasley/Mr. Sabatini) in the popular children's show Bob the Builder for the United States and Canada (Series 1–9). He produces, directs, acts and engineers for his audio theatre company, Rocky Coast Radio Theatre. He has been nominated six times as an audiobook finalist for the APA's Audie Award and has garnered eighteen Earphones Awards through AudioFile magazine, which also named him One of the Best Voices at the End of the Century.
