The radio show got to be a lot of fun after we'd been doing it for twenty years or so and figured out that it isn't American Literature, it isn't Adult Bible Study, IT'S ONLY A SHOW. That's the amazing thing—it's been so much fun. Musicians and actors are the salt of the earth and also the ranch dressing of the earth and it's a big party getting dressed up in your radio clothes and doing Guy Noir or the cowboys Dusty and Lefty or yakking about your old school bus driver back in Lake Wobegon, the one who steered with his knees and flavored his coffee with brandy. It's all here, plus the Ten-Minute Macbeth and "Ruth Harrison, Reference Librarian" and some Hip Honk music by the Shoe Band. Now momentarily a Major Motion Picture starring Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Kline, Virginia Madsen and Lindsay Lohan, but once and forever a radio show. Truck drivers picked it up while crossing Wyoming, kids listened in the back seat of the car heading up to Vermont, my mother tuned in regularly in Lake Wobegon.
