"As someone who is committed to the living word of God reaching into as many homes as possible, I can think of no more artistically beautiful way than this." --Dr. Billy Graham
"I encourage you -- urge you -- to join the many gifted people who have assembled this magnificent project. As it was for me, it can be your guide and companion in an exciting and fulfilling voyage of the spirit." --David Frost
"The Bible recordings are just superb, an essentially great contribution." --Dr. Norman Vincent Peale
The story behind this recording of The Bible by Laurence Olivier is one of incredible dedication. Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. believed that by bringing together the foremost dramatists, producers and musical authorities, a modern "spoken" version of the Bible could be produced which would become a new and exciting source of inspiration for those who heard it.
Fairbanks turned to his dear friend, Laurence Oliver -- recognized by many as the world's greatest actor -- as the only choice to interpret the word of God for the recordings. He turned to Lord Aberdare, a noted historian, to consult with Biblical scholars to determine the stories, chapters, and verses to be included. He turned to Cyril Ornadel, to search the Holy Land for ancient melodies, songs, and chants to be background for Olivier's performance. This recording of The Bible became a labor of love for those involved. Over three years of painstaking preparation and recording were needed to achieve the goal.
This deluxe bound, 6 COMPACT DISC set includes all the favorite Bible stories: 36 stories and 23 Psalms in all. A lavishly illustrated, 60 page Guide to the Bible contains the complete text of the recordings and notes on the musical score. This is surely a must have collection for every home in which children can hear the greatest stories ever told for the first time, and adults can refresh their memories with the beauty and wisdom of the ages.
Perhaps most importantly, The Bible is a very human document. The People of the Book were people who loved, hated, fought, resisted temptation or gave in to it, followed God's will or were punished for failing to do so. The reading by Laurence Oliver are inspiring and touching, and can provide guidance and insight into our own modern times.
