Three years have passed since Lucas Trust was killed by a car bomb. Short Top Detroit was convinced that he had faked his death. Short Top is a detective that lives inside cheap paperbacks, but now resides in Willie's head. Willie keeps hearing Short Top's voice giving him advice... and he's often wrong.

Shades asks Willie to look after his cats, Tweetie Bird and Sylvester. Willie soon realizes has skipped town, there's a couple of heavies looking for him. When Celia, Shades' niece arrives, she discovers there's a connection between Shades' gambling debt and Luke's murder. Willie finds himself running from gangsters, searching for buried treasure, arguing with Short Top, and falling in love with Celia. And to top it off, Celia is now hearing Short Top's voice inside her head! Sound like you've never heard before, all around you, above and below!
