Great Expectations combines a story of-unrequited love with classic adventure as Pip --- one of Dickens' semi-autobiographical characters falls in love with Estella and is financed to fulfill his ambition to become a gentleman by a mysterious benefactor, whose surprising identity he eventually discovers.
