The Story of Philosophy has sold more than two-million copies since its publication in 1926.

The most engaging writer of Western intellectual history summarizes the lives, ideas and influence of philosophy's greatest thinkers. The Story of Philosophy is recognized as the seminal work in the field.

From Plato to Voltaire and the French Enlightenment

From Kant to William James and the American Pragmatists

Spanning the 5th century B.C. to the 20th century A.D., The Story of Philosophy is a timeless overview of Western thought. Will Durant's goal was to humanize knowledge by centering the story around certain dominant personalities, including Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Voltaire, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Schopenhauer, Spencer, Nietzsche, Bergson, Croce, Russell, Santayana, James, and Dewey. He brilliantly illustrates how philosophy has evolved over time, explaining the historical, cultural, and political context of each movement and each great thinker.

The bestselling philosophy book of the past century, this masterpiece of eloquent, clear prose continues to fascinate.
