The fatherless David is continually beset by personal difficulties. He rises from a poverty-stricken, abusive childhood to a world of fame and fortune. David is no simple innocent like Oliver Twist; David is more like Pip in Great Expectations, who struggles through initial difficulties to cherish and covet the world of prosperity and success, giving depth and a darker cast to his character. This novel is somewhat autobiographical.

A Cover to Cover Unabridged Classic.

About the Author: Charles Dickens (1812-1870) took up journalism at age 22 and joined a London newspaper. In 1836 his Sketches by Boz and Pickwick Papers were published. He worked relentlessly, producing many successful novels that created a gallery of notable characters and also campaigned against many of the social evils of his time. His novels have subsequently been adapted for theater, cinema, radio, and television.

About the Performer: Martin Jarvis was named Reader of the Year in 1996 by the British Spoken Word Association. He is a highly-recognized voice talent and his numerous readings for the BBC have earned him a wide and enthusiastic following. He recently appeared in the film, Titanic, and was the voice on The Audio Partners' publication of A Night To Remember, Ovid's Art Of Love, and Graham Greene's The Third Man.
