"We humbly thank Miss Read for the enormous richness, charm and delight she has added to our days." -- Jan Karon, author of the popular Mitford books, as posted to the Penguin Putnam, Inc., web page.

Listeners who are fond of bestselling author Jan Karon have a treat in store with their discovery of Miss Read. Her Thrush Green series offers comforting, cozy fiction with engaging characters and gentle humor.

When a fire destroys the ugly rectory, there is much discussion among the Thrush Green townsfolk about what will become of the vacant site, now that the previous residents (the village rector and his wife) have been transferred to another village. Everyone is cheered when it is decided to build some retirement homes, and so Rectory Cottages begin to take shape, designed by a local architect. But then feelings run high and wagging tongues are again engaged over the question of who will live in these new homes. And after those people are chosen, will they get along together? There are plenty of wrinkles to iron out before any newcomers will feel at home in Thrush Green.

Miss Read is a pseudonym for Dora Jessie Saint, who wrote prolifically based on her life as a teacher in a small English village. She wrote 30 novels in her Thrush Green and Fairacre series. She began her writing career as an essayist for the British magazine Punch and has been a scriptwriter for BBC. Retired now from both teaching and writing, she recently celebrated her 86th birthday and lives in a tiny Berkshire hamlet.

Gwen Watford (1927-1994) enjoyed an award winning acting career that spanned decades and included numerous stage, screen, and television performances.
