"Not for some time have I enjoyed a spoken word recording as thoroughly as this, with text and reader ideally combined. Recorded literature, like recorded music, deserves such thoughtful and meticulous attention... Sam Dastor reads easily and fluently, phrasing the narrative impeccably with skillful characterization of various voices." --Gramophone

"This is not really a children's story at all, but a complex, adult adventure, heady with kaleidoscopic, palpable sensuousness of India. Like India itself, the story teems with energy and magic, and in the Tibetan Lama's spiritual search for the sacred river, the espionage of the Great Game is balanced by gentle purity. Sam Dastor's skill in creating the hypnotic rhythms of Indian speech is astonishing. The result is brilliant: Kipling would have loved it." --Rachael Redford, The Daily Telegraph

Set in the intriguing and spiritual world of 19th-century India, this adventure is widely regarded as Rudyard Kipling's finest work. Though some consider this to be a children's story, it is really a complex adult tale of spiritual adventure, and it offers rich insight into British history in India. Reader Sam Dastor delivers a virtuoso performance that wonderfully depicts the color, sounds, and people of India.

Later works include Puck of Pook's Hill (1906) and the autobiographical Something of Myself (1937). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907.
