"Beautifully read by Patricia Routledge, who is well able to encompass the black passions, the tragedy and the lyricism of this haunting story." --The Times "Patricia Routledge's reading, with her subtle modulation and vocal range, irons out a possibly confusing plot, conveying the novel's dominating passion and power." --The Sunday Times In this sprawling classic, considered by many literary experts to be the finest novel in the English language, Emily Brontė crafted a wild, fierce anti-hero in Heathcliff and a willful heroine in Catherine. A Yorkshire farmer brings home a young waif named Heathcliff to raise with his other children, Catherine and Hindley. As they grow up together, Catherine and Heathcliff fall in love, despite the constant evils of Hindley. Their fates are not aligned, however, and both endure incredible hardship. Emily Brontė (1818-1848) was the sister of Charlotte and Anne. In 1845, the three sisters self-published Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell (the pseudonyms of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne). Wuthering Heights was published in 1847, and Emily died the following year from tuberculosis. Patricia Routledge works extensively in theater, television, and radio. In 1992, she won the Critic's Award as Best Actress for her performance in A Woman of No Importance, a play written for her by Alan Bennett. In 1984, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company to play Queen Margaret in Richard III. In 1993, she was awarded the O.B.E. for services to the arts. |
