Sir Wingrave Seton allowed himself to be imprisoned for nine years rather than betraying a lady's honor. He seeks revenge by acquiring immense wealth for the sole purpose of destroying the lives of others. A lonely Boston housewife, a young stockbroker and an orphaned daughter of a church organist all seem to be headed for life disasters; just in time a mysterious benefactor saves each of them.

Seton ultimately sets his sights on the woman who conspired to betray him with her husband. He takes great pleasure in watching them suffer the pain he inflicts upon them. But a new young lover slowly starts to thaw the Malefactor's icy heart, prompting him to abandon his misanthropic plans. Is it too late?

About the Author: E. Phillips Oppenheim, the self-styled "prince of storytellers," is considered one of the pioneers of the "thriller" genre. A best-selling British author, he produced over one hundred novels, mostly about crime, suspense and international espionage but he also wrote about romance, comedy and parables of everyday life.

Like Oppenheim's own propensity for the finer things in life, his works feature protagonists who delight in luxurious surroundings and Epicurean meals, and the relaxed pursuit of criminal practice. His most successful novels include Kingdom of the Blind, The Great Impersonation, and Envoy Extraordinaire.

Oppenheim was born in London in 1866. He was employed in his father's leather business until a wealthy US company bought the business and left him free to pursue a writing career.

Although Oppenheim had a fondness for Monte Carlo, good food and wine, for most of his life he maintained a regular schedule of work and productivity of an almost monastic nature. Oppenheim died in 1946.

About the Performer: John Bolen brings his extensive theatre, film and TV experience to audiobooks. Recent TV appearances include CIA: Masters of Deception on the Discovery Channel and Courage on the Fox Family Channel. Other recent film work includes The Land, The Inn Outside The World, Dream Parlor, and the American Film Institute’s Women Directors Workshop short, This Is Bill. He has performed at many theatres in the LA area. In Beyond Reasonable Doubt he portrayed Sir David Metcalfe and Jim in Later Life. He was featured as Dr. Montague in The Haunting of Hill House, Grandpa Joe in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Mr. Meeker in Inherit the Wind, Henri and the Shore Patrolman in South Pacific, and Lord Montague in Romeo and Juliet. He starred as Palmer Forrester in Murder Among Friends and Dr. Gerald Lyman in Bus Stop. Other plays include The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Tribunal, A Dickens of a Christmas, Once Upon A Mattress, Fiddler on the Roof, and Finian's Rainbow. John performs in an ongoing school touring production, Billy’s Closet. He is also a playwright and member of New Voices Playwrights Theatre. John and his wife, Lynne, live in Irvine, CA with their four children.
